YOUR GUIDE TO BOOKING THE PERFECT TRIP

What Makes a Great Fly Fishing Holiday?

A great fly fishing holiday isn’t just about the fish in the net. It’s about matching the right water to the right angler. Every FLYRUN trip is hand-picked, expertly guided, and built around specific experience. Here’s how to choose yours.

Pick a Fly Fishing Destination That Matches Your Goals

Chasing a truly wild, exotic species? Our Indian Himalayas Golden Mahseer and Fly Fishing India vacations target one of the hardest-pulling freshwater gamefish in the world, in jungle rivers on the Nepalese border. Swing streamers with a double-hander through classic pools, or cover the pocket water with a single-hander and tactically place your fly in every likely looking slack or eddy.

Do you want to sight fish to big wild trout? Fly Fishing in New Zealand is the vacation for you. Sometimes our guides and clients will spend hours watching large trout feed in crystal clear waters while hatching the perfect plan to catch an individual fish. This could involve chucking a large terrestrial pattern, or a tiny size 18 spent spinner. It varies from fish to fish.

Want classic European rivers with culture on the side? Spain, the Pyrenees, France and the Basque Country pair a fly fishing holiday with some of the best food and mountain scenery in Europe to deliver an unforgettable adventure. Drawn to British Isles tradition? Then Wales and Scotland deliver the perfect fishing holiday for native wild brown trout, grayling, salmon and sea trout.

Fish the Right Season for Your Fly Fishing Holiday

Selecting the right time of year is massively important and will shape your whole vacation experience — right down to the clothes you’re wearing, which river your guide takes you to, and what fly you’re fishing. Our expertise lets us know when you should head to each destination, and we can provide expert advice on what equipment to pack and what fishing style you can expect on any particular river at that time of year.

Prepare Properly — Especially Your Casting

The most common mistake we see is anglers who invest in gear but turn up rusty before their fly fishing vacation. Practising casting with the right weight rod, leader length and fly size before heading overseas will help you hit the ground running. For example, using a leader of 18 foot or more is standard in NZ, so you’ll want to show up confident you can make the cast when your guide spots that trophy trout. Of course, if you don’t get a chance to practise, our guides are experts at getting anglers up to scratch on the water. They’ll also provide you with a full equipment list before you head off, including suggested gear and clothing.

Treat the Journey as Part of the Trip

A week on the Saryu, the Tongariro or a high Pyrenean stream is never just about the fish. Read a little about where you’re going before you travel — its history, its food, its people. Arrive curious. Sit by the fire. Eat the local cuisine. The anglers who get the most out of these trips are almost always the ones who treat the fishing as one part of a much larger adventure. Our guides love sharing their local culture.
